BioFund in Canada

A country of collaborators, joined one conversation at a time.

The Canadian Circle is how BioFund works across Canada. We place real work — a cell line, a biosimilar, a processing project, an idea worth testing — in the hands of researchers, colleges, and innovators who share the mission.

Not a program you apply to. A circle you are invited into.

Why we're here

Cancer is not something any one lab, company, or country solves alone. So we don't try to. We build together, in the open, with people who choose the work.

BioFund is a proudly Canadian family office, founded by seven families with a single charge: to cure and prevent cancer. We work through a OneHealth approach — helping the companion animals who need care today, learning from that data to accelerate human medicine, and reaching the people we'll protect tomorrow. Our non-profits are federally incorporated here, our labs and infrastructure are on the ground here, our earliest collaborators are here. Canada is home, and the Circle is how we grow that home: person to person, project by project.

What we bring to a collaboration

We invest our platforms where the science is real.

Each collaboration begins with something concrete, matched to your world. Not a menu — the one thing that fits. Everything below was built for our own research. The right partner gets access.

01

Novel proteins & biosimilars

We produce novel proteins and biosimilars for our own oncology and OneHealth research. When a research programme needs a protein we already carry, access is straightforward — a joint project that puts the right biology in the right hands.

In practice We had produced our own anti-PD-L1 biosimilar for internal research. A team at the University of Guelph needed exactly that reference protein to advance their work. We opened access. Their research moved forward.
02

Cell line engineering

When a researcher has discovered a molecule but the biology won't cooperate — expression unstable, protein output too low — our platform exists to solve that. We engineer a stable, high-yield cell line around their molecule. The discovery stays theirs.

In practice A researcher had a molecule with real therapeutic potential. It wouldn't express at the yield the work demanded. We built a stable cell line around it. The science that had been stalling began to move.
03

Animal health & OneHealth

Companion animals develop the same cancers humans do — spontaneously, in real bodies. We work with veterinary researchers whose patients need care today. The data those treatments generate also shortens the road to human therapeutics. One act of medicine, two beneficiaries.

In practice Our lead therapeutic asset entered companion animal trials first — generating real-world clinical data in a fraction of the time a conventional human-first pathway would require, while helping animals that needed treatment now.
04

UFP500 platform

We built the UFP500 platform for our own product development — ultra-fine particle processing that transforms plant, marine, and agricultural material into research-grade ingredients. Prevention starts with what we put into the body, and that starts with what we choose not to throw away.

In practice A seafood processor in Summerside, PEI was discarding lobster shell — rich in bioactive compounds, headed for landfill. Run through UFP500, it became a validated research ingredient. Prevention and the planet, in one project.
05

AI-guided bioactive discovery

We built our AI discovery tools to guide our own search for bioactive compounds — the molecules in plants, fungi, and marine organisms that protect cells before disease takes hold. Curing cancer is one half of the mission. The other half is making sure fewer people need to be cured. If you have a discovery problem where that intelligence layer helps, we work on it together.

In practice micronutri.ai grew from our own prevention research — mapping the bioactive landscape to find what the science predicts will matter. The platform is open to partners whose work shares that upstream ambition.

We think like an impact investor, not a donor: we commit our assets first, and look to build toward shared investment as a collaboration proves itself.

How it works

A simple sequence, repeated with care.

i

We meet

Through a friend, a colleague, or an introduction. The first conversation is a conversation — never a pitch.

ii

We match the work

Together we find the one small project that fits your program and ours — real enough to matter, light enough to start now.

iii

We invest

We commit the material, the processing, or the tools first. As the work proves itself, we look to build toward shared investment together.

iv

We grow the circle

Good work introduces the next collaborator. The network grows the way trust does — through the people already in it.

The ecosystem behind every collaboration

When you work with one part of BioFund, you meet all of it.

A single collaboration opens onto the wider world of the mission — each entity a doorway to the others.
